Our Approach to Pediatric Care

We love seeing little patients. From a baby’s first tooth to a teenager’s routine checkup, we provide gentle, kid-friendly dental care designed to make every visit feel comfortable and fun. Our treatment rooms have TVs with Netflix, YouTube TV, and Disney+ to keep kids entertained, and our team knows how to work with children at every stage of development. We believe early dental visits set the foundation for a lifetime of healthy habits—and we make sure kids (and parents) leave feeling good about coming back.

First Time Visits

We recommend bringing your child in for their first dental visit by age one, or when their first tooth appears. Early visits help us monitor development, catch any concerns before they grow, and—most importantly—help your child build a positive relationship with the dentist from the start.

What happens at my child’s first dental visit?

Your child's first visit is focused on a positive, comfortable introduction to dental care. We'll gently brush their teeth, complete an exam, and discuss any findings. Much of the appointment is spent getting to know you and your child — learning about their diet and brushing habits and sharing tips to keep their smile healthy. It's completely normal for young children to squirm or cry, and our team will remain patient and gentle throughout.

Prevention

Preventative care for kids goes beyond cleanings. We teach children (and parents) the right habits early—proper brushing technique, flossing, and how to spot potential problems—so they grow up with a strong foundation for lifelong oral health.

When should my child start getting X-rays?

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) recommended children have their first dental bitewing X-rays only when the teeth in the back begin to touch each other and the surfaces between teeth cannot be seen visually during an examination.  This typically occurs around 3 years old, but can occur earlier or later depending on the child.

Nutrition

What your child eats and drinks plays an important role in their dental health. At Waukee Dental, we provide practical, age-appropriate nutrition guidance to help families build habits that support strong teeth and reduce the risk of cavities.

Our team will discuss how sugary and acidic foods and beverages affect teeth, identify habits that may increase cavity risk, and recommend tooth-friendly choices. We understand that every child and family is different, so our recommendations are realistic, personalized, and designed to fit your family’s routine.

Toothpaste

Choosing the right toothpaste is an important part of protecting your child's smile. At Waukee Dental, we provide age-appropriate guidance on fluoride toothpaste, proper amounts, and brushing techniques based on your child's individual needs. Our team can also recommend products for sensitivity, cavity risk, flavor preferences, or texture concerns.

Frequently Asked Questions

At what age should my child first see a dentist?

We recommend bringing your child in by age one or when their first tooth appears. Early visits help us monitor development and get your child comfortable with the dentist before any real treatment is needed.

How do I prepare my child for their first dental visit?

Keep the conversation positive, simple, and relaxed. Let your child know that the dentist will count and brush their teeth to help keep their smile healthy. Reading a book or watching an age-appropriate video about visiting the dentist can also help them know what to expect.

How do I prepare my child for a restorative or filling visit?

Keep your explanation simple, positive, and reassuring — let your child know their provider will help make their tooth strong and healthy. Avoid anxiety-inducing words like 'shot,' 'needle,' or 'hurt.' Make sure they're well-rested and follow any eating or drinking instructions, especially if nitrous oxide will be used. You're welcome to bring a comfort item, and try to stay calm yourself — kids take cues from their parents. After treatment, help your child avoid biting or chewing their lip or cheek while the area is still numb.

Do you see teenagers as well as young children?

Absolutely. We care for patients from infancy through their teen years and beyond. Our whole-family approach means your child can grow up with the same trusted dental team.
